The Rhyme of Forms
2014 >>video ( Installation view of The Moment of Devotion in DOU Maison gallery, Tainan, 2014 ) History urges the contemporary makers to immerse themselves in its flow, to capture the events that take place on the spur of the moment. The malleability hidden in history can then be altered. This character of fluidity within history is neither concrete nor abstract, but something closer to a restless stir of senses and emotions. A maker captures a variety of material phenomena that occurs at the moment of his or her affection towards history. If this process is to be represented by a form of literature, then it certainly possesses the quality of a rhyme: not quite a poem, not quite an essay, but a hybrid composed of mixed emotive elements.
‘The Rhyme of Forms’ is a site-specific installation with a concept material derived from the brand’s designated fabric for the season, jute. Tracing back the history of the jute-production industry in Tainan to the Japanese Occupation Period, and also re-evaluating the chronicity within the jute material, I collected an assortment of clothing donated for charity. Close attention was paid to the processing of jute and cotton fabrics in this clothing collection: I mixed the fabrics with binder, aggregate, and concrete, and then burned the mixture to disintegrate the organic fibers within. Hollow spaces reminiscent of the original fabrics were created, and the blocks of concrete mixture became “artificial clothing fossils.” The pieces of abandoned, or ownerless, clothing were like objects in exile. They are returned now, however, to the commercial space. Through this process of rebirth, I attempt to revitalize the mechanism of commercial display and redefine the relationship between the self and the material. |
