Dialogues Project V - IN TRANSIT 對話系列 V - 在途中 Ting Chaong-Wen 丁昶文 Hyojun HYUN 孝賢炫 Double Solo Exhibition 雙個展
Dates: September 14 to 26, 2021 展期: 2021年9月14日至9月26日 ( Installation view of IN TRANSIT, bbk berlin, 2021)
Berlin-based Korean artist Hyojun Hyun and Taiwanese artist Chaong-Wen Ting, who were residing in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, collaborated on the project "In Transit. Two artists meet in Berlin and bring their works to the space to explore the relations of each other and to see the possibilities beyond verbal communication.
Hyojun Hyun and Chaong-Wen Ting both are interested in the materials found in everyday life. Ting called the city a “relic of modern life” which serves as interesting materials to access. Hyun collects objects and reflects these on painting history, and Ting brings his cultural background to the work with modern materials.
Hyojun Hyun is a typical representative of significant group of artists of his generation. The group, which is characteristic for its nomadic lifestyle by cruising through the contemporary art centres, when studying abroad is followed by moving into the cities, where accumulates creative energy and from daily reality pulling foreign residency. Hyojun`s painting is (although unintentionally) quite atypically direct part of author’s unceasing migration for inspiration. In his paintings he deals with capturing of already obscured parts of the past, which are mainly found in “brownfield” areas, that is, in parts of cities that are temporarily forgotten by themselves. It is remarkable that the visual attraction by cracked walls, rusty gates, sprayed plasters and torn down posters, was equally irresistible for the Czech cult artist—Vladimír Boudník. Boudník mostly found his inspiration around factory ČKD Vysočany, that is, in a direct distance of PRÁM Studio, where Hyojun apparently totally intuitively moved in to work there for a month.
The paintings Hyojun is going to show in the exhibition are Composition # series. He sees things that interest him in his daily life. Hyojun has been living in Berlin since 2015, so the urban landscape or part of it becomes his subject matter naturally. This is also extended from his project Anonymous Leftovers which he started in 2013 when he was at the Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. At that time, he was more interested in faded graffiti on the walls or abandoned areas in the city. But since he moved to Berlin, he focused more on torn posters on the walls. You can see them everywhere here in the city of Berlin. He found interesting compositions on torn posters; you are not sure who made them and their purpose. He is fascinated by their contingency and anonymity. He tries to translate these into his pictorial language.
