With the work “Darkness Equation”, there is a temptation to draw a boundary line which cannot be defined by cultural geography. The rock-covered landscape formed by several eruptions of the Mount Mihara volcano symbolizes the uneasiness of the community and the expectation of disaster. This black sand desert bedded with volcanic rock, providing people with a physical experience of heterogeneous space and illusions, stimulates an imagination for culture workers in terms of Izu Oshima. These fictional disasters and horror movies contribute*, therefore, to our understanding/misunderstanding of this place. I am going to investigate and extend the process that helps visualize symbols in a culture system, and, in the meantime, study the process by which materiality helps constitute bias, metaphors and invisible history.
